A collection of links, videos and random findings from the web
Once again, this has been sitting in my drafts for some time. But good stuff is good stuff no matter how old it is, isn’t it?

great ideas about stuff you can do with an old record player by Graham Dunning:
In was reading this interview with Daniel Lopatin aka Oneohtrix Point Never and ran into this paragraph here:
A musician is someone who—and this is me talking, not Thurston—if we were having a cocktail party, and there was a piano in the room, you’d say, “Oh, Dan, why don’t you play us in Scott Joplin, or something?” I’d say, “Sure, no problem.” I’d put my drink down, and we’d have a great time, and I’d play whatever. I could do that… if I was a musician, and I’m not. Nobody at a party wants to hear me sit down and start improvising, and doing some weird minimalist paradiddles that become some forlorn melody. In that sense, I’m just feeling my way through the instrument in an intuitive way—and an embarrassing way, frankly.

and I was like: “yep, that’s so totally me”.

And another quote, which is a good reminder to all of us:
We are the human beings that are meant to curate the web. We should continue to spread the word about how we use the web, which is very personally and as active participants. We should make clear our desire for technologies that are accessible for non-technical people to be able to join us in controlling their own web presence. We build our websites and share our thoughts and link our links. Over time the web becomes surfable to more and more people.

Now, Mr. Hess is co-creator of the blogging platform Pika, so he has some skin in the game here, but his point is a very good one nonetheless.
and now for some completely different AI things…

We’re talking a lot about how bad AI is and indeed a lot what is being done with it is just bad, or stupid. But of course it could be used to do useful stuff as well and we should definitely talk about that.
An interesting article on this point can be found here:
The article focuses on the use of AI in journalism, but some of the points can be applied to other fields as well.
And talking about AI, here’s another really interesting read on the topic:
The author describes it as a “reluctant manifesto for the contemporary moment in visual art, sound and text.”
Last but not least, from the same author as the AI article above is a very interesting one about Apple’s latest iPad ad (above).
The ad is a perfect metaphor for the generative AI training process: squish it all — all! — into a model. All that stuff becomes one interface. It’s a reductive AI frame again, one in which human expression is fodder for products. This time, the product isn’t hidden behind the obfuscation of “artificial intelligence,” it is a physical product — just another iPad.
