Blinking Lights 022: The Year of RSS And The Perfect Mixer

Resist Recuperation! I find this list from the article especially interesting/inspiring:

  • Making art which isn’t designed to be packaged or sold
  • Spending time in public places which don’t require you to spend any money
  • Not monetising your hobby
  • Not using branding or creating a ‘visual identity’
  • Not following trends
  • Recognising that political action doesn’t start or end on social media

I’ll have to get back to the “no branding” thing. Many thoughts on that.

I like this take on the topic of RSS vs Social Media:

Whenever I beat the RSS drum, someone always asks about discoverability, so I want to put this bluntly: it is through algorithmic discoverability features that harmful posts become visible. Whether they are original posts, reposts, or replies, harmful posts are only able to successfully reach their intended audience by depending on those features functioning as social media websites built them.

And more thoughts on why we should all move to blogs:

But seriously, it’s nice. Lower your standards. Unkink your writing, it’s got all tangled up from fitting into that tiny box. You can put a pictures into them if you want, but you don’t have to. There’s no algorithm to beat, no best time of day or necessary face pic needed. You can refer to a thing you wrote in the past in the future!

Here’s your Guide to DRM-Free Living: Audio

This is going to be my next mixer/audio interface now that unfortunately my K-Mix died while trying to get the sticky rubber coating off (long boring story, so I’ll spare you the details).

And I think Mr. Synthdad might have gotten one thing wrong: This is basically an audio interface that can also work standalone as a mixer and recorder, like on most audio interfaces the knobs are gain controls, so what’s missing is not the gain, but the channel level control.

Not a big deal to me, but I do think Zoom really missed one opportunity here: it has no stereo send busses! Just the usual, boring mono ones. That was actually the one thing that I really loved about the K-Mix!

What a wonderful idea! An offline network made of USB keys!
